July 14, 2003: Kelsey took this photo of Grenoble as I teared up over having forgotten more film. I have honestly never seen a more breathtaking view in my life. We were literally in the Bastille on the night of Bastille Day, thousands of feet up, deaf to the chaos below. So high up, you can only hear the wind, you get the feeling of seclusion the prisoners must have felt. It is mind-boggling realizing you are so far from everything, looking behind only to see the most notorious prison ever as it devours you. Their eldest brother told us a story of his days living in Grenoble in the 80's, of once staying up in the Bastille so late the Telepherique closed for the night. They wandered down the massive mountain like escapees, and early the next morning found themselves several villages over.
